When I see a headline that attempts to defend the indefensible my natural curiosity takes over, so imagine when i was faced with this headline :
This little gem gets me :
"the criminal law is a very blunt and inadequate instrument for resolving
the complex issues of trust and consent in real life sexual
relationships, mired as they are in game playing, half-truths, social
expectations, emotional pressure, feelings of obligation and unequal
power relationships."
No Andy, Rape is rape. Trying to define the meaning to help your hero (assange) out does you nor Galloway any favours . I used the term "hero" as it is only hero worship that could cloud someones judgement on such a serious charge.
Andy, I hope you have never been raped, I have, it is one of the most frighting, disturbing experience you can ever go through, It can take days/weeks/months even years for some rape victims to even acknowledge that what has happened to them is a crime and thats before they even consider reporting it to the police. Then if they do report it to police it reaches another level of humiliation, having another stranger inspect your body, prodding and poking you while all that goes through your head is the rape that has occurred. Then onto making a statement hen you have to relive every detail of the attach on you. Then the wait for the trail, night after night of nightmares, waking up every 5 mins think the alleged rapist is in the room, then comes the day where you have to see the accused in court and have to relive the whole incident again. If it does go your way and the rapist is found guilty then he will be sent to prison and you can then start to rebuild your life, if it doesn't then your life is effectively over, you will become depressed, try and commit suicide (if you haven't tried already waiting to go to court).
Rape is not like having a cold, getting a cure and feeling better, the scares will stay with you for the rest of your life, they never heal ( you just learn to live with it) , the ability to ever conduct a "normal" relationship is virtually impossible.
You claim you are a member of the Labour party, Is that not a party that fights for womens rights? that tried to get the reporting of alleged rape on the increase? Or is this Assange a special case.
" What has subsequently happened though has taken on the character of a
witch hunt. There is a danger here that all allegations of rape carry
with them an assumption of guilt, and that any critical questioning of
what does and does not constitute consent in real world sex is traduced
as if it was apologia for rape. Galloway’s remarks have become the
centre of a moral panic of the chatterati, being gleefully stoked up by
the self-interested spite of his many detractors."
Andy, the law on rape is quite clear and the fact you need to even question it is slightly worrying.
" Frankly, the left should resist the moral panic and stand with George
Galloway. It is easier to swim with the stream and join the quacking
chorus of detractors, but now is the time for George Galloway’s friends
and allies to speak out in his support."
Frankly if the left came out and supported George over this then the phrase *morally bankrupt* would be a statement of fact.
I joked the other day that Assange had become a cult leader and his cult was different to supporting the work of wikileaks, then i read the piece by Andy and it hit me, i wasn't joking!
Andy, maybe you should consider the alleged victims in this case, being made to wait for justice by a man holed in the Ecuadorian embassy?
I am glad your view is not represented by mainstream labour politicians.
